The 2026 Coast-to-Coast Tour: Western Leg
The tour kicked off on March 29, 2026, when 4014 departed its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, beginning a western swing through Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California. Over 27 whistle-stops, railfans packed crossings and overpasses from Laramie to Truckee. Two marquee display weekends drew massive crowds:
- Roseville, California — April 10-11
- Ogden, Utah — April 18-19
The western leg wrapped up back in Cheyenne on April 24, but everyone knew the bigger story was still ahead.
The Eastern Leg: Big Boy Goes Where It's Never Gone Before
On May 25, 2026, No. 4014 departed Cheyenne again — this time heading east, into territory it had never touched. For the first time since the 1940s, a Union Pacific steam locomotive operated east of Chicago, running on Norfolk Southern's mainline in a rare cross-railroad collaboration. That alone made this tour a once-in-a-generation event.
The eastern leg delivered over 50 whistle-stops and eight major display events across ten states, including:
