From the 2019 Golden Spike run to the 2026 Coast-to-Coast Tour, here are the Big Boy 4014 tours Union Pacific and the trade press have documented.
Big Boy 4014 has been a touring ambassador since its return. This page covers the outings we could confirm from Union Pacific and trade press. Union Pacific runs additional events in some years, so check its steam schedule for the full list.
2019: The Comeback
The first trip ran from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Ogden, Utah, May 4 to 8, for the Golden Spike 150th anniversary, alongside Northern No. 844. By the end of 2019 it had also toured the Upper Midwest, Southwest and Southern California, according to RailGiants. American-Rails reports more than a million people came out to see it that season.
2023: Home Run Express
4014 made its 2023 debut in June and July with the Home Run Express to the NCAA Men's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska (Trains).
2024: Two Tours
- Westward Bound Tour (June 30 to July 26): Cheyenne to Roseville, California, and back, with display days in Ogden, Roseville and Portola. It was the first visit to Ogden since 2019.
- Heartland of America Tour (Aug. 28 to Oct. 23): through 10 states, including display days in Rochelle, Illinois; Houston; and Fort Worth. Union Pacific said 4014 would visit 14 states in 2024.
2025
Fox 4 Kansas City describes 2025 as a limited tour.
2026: Coast to Coast for America's 250th
Union Pacific called it the first coast-to-coast tour for 4014, and Railway Age reports it covered 7,442 miles and ended in Cheyenne on July 29.
- Western leg (March 29 to April 24): Cheyenne to Sacramento, kicking off at Milepost 0, with an Ogden display on April 18 and 19.
- Eastern leg (began May 25): across Norfolk Southern track for the first time. Extended stops were made in Ogden, Omaha, West Chicago, Buffalo and Scranton, then Philadelphia for Independence Day. On the return, 4014 stopped in Altoona, Fostoria and St. Louis.
- Railway Age reports it was the engine's first visit to the East since leaving the Alco plant in 1941.
